Physical activity is a key component of childhood development. Over the past three years, Transylvania Count Parks and Recreation has been working directly with the Early Childhood Initiative and Get Set Transylvania to develop new programs geared toward young children.
Silvermont Park, Transylvania County’s newest recreational facility, is the first county playground designed for children as young as two-years-old.
Additionally, Parks and Recreation has added programming for young children that includes summer camp opportunities, Start Smart basketball, indoor play during cooler months, expanded Christmas activities and, the newest, flag football. The department has also invested in a new portable imagination playground.

The Family Place offers family resources and prepares fun, educational activities for parents and children, ages 0-12, with a special emphasis on 0-6 year-old children. The organization provides drop-in playgroups for parents/caregivers and their children, frequent local field trips. Their Circle of Parents groups offer a great way to build community with other families. The Family Place also offers parenting classes, a Family Learning Garden, English as a second language classes, and community playgroups, a mobile resource for parents/caregivers and their children, ages 0-6 years. The Family Place is primarily funded through grants and donations, resulting in no cost to participating families for its programs.
Mountain Sun provides Montessori and outdoor education for children ages 3 through middle school.
New Adventure provide childcare for children 12 months to 5 years of age and participates in the NC Pre-K program.
Pisgah Collective provides outdoor inspired early childhood education, a morning preschool program, after-school programs and special events.
Smart Start of Transylvania County is aligned with the North Carolina Partnership for Children (Smart Start) a nationally recognized, award-winning early childhood initiative designed to ensure that young children enter school healthy and ready to succeed. This organization focuses on Early Educator development, early literacy, resource lending library and child care health consultation and is Transylvania County’s Administrator for NC Pre-K.
The Transylvania County Library offers a variety of programs for all ages including early literacy storytimes, early learning activity boxes, bookmobile, meeting/study rooms, public Wi-Fi, public computers, print and digital books, music, movies, magazines and more.
Transylvania County Schools provides a wide range of services and programs, including preschool educational services, developmental day services, exceptional children’s services, NC PreK programming, private pay preschool, voucher/subsidy preschool, and Project Child Find.
WCCA provides Early Head Start, Head Start and NC Pre-K programs, plus Mobile Meals, Lunch Plus, Self Sufficiency and Liquid Nutrition.
